Statement on LMS incidents of racism and bullying

The incidents of racism and bullying at Lynnfield Middle School are unacceptable. I refer to the three recent incidents referenced in the recent Superintendent email to the LPS community, and to the many unreported incidents that I’ve heard about as a LMS parent.
As a parent, I appreciate the School Committee members and candidates who have posted statements that racism, bigotry, and bullying have no place in our schools. As a Select Board candidate, I ask: what specific, measurable actions are being taken to address this behavior?
With Superintendent Geary’s recent email all LPS parents are now aware of the three recent incidents of racism and bullying. I applaud this awareness escalating to the full LPS community as it is a community issue - not something that just impacts LMS. Now that the communication has happened, it’s time for action.
We need to explore what policies are in place to document consequences for unacceptable behavior, what initiatives are being prioritized to address this behavior, and what metrics will be put in place to measure progress towards our shared goal of creating a safe environment, offering the best possible educational experience for all students.
I support our communal response to these racist incidents, both as a LMS parent and as a candidate for Lynnfield Select Board.
